Everyone wants to make their home look different from every other house in the street, so having unique mailboxes isn’t weird at all. In the 1960s, where I came from at least, people used to adorn their front yard with ceramic pink flamingos or a giant wooden butterfly stuck on the side of the house. In retrospect, it looked dumb. What makes people want to make their home unique? I suppose there are two reasons, one to find your house easily at night when you’ve had too much to drink and two, to break with conformity. Today, however, the pink flamingos and large butterflies have gone as people realize just how much of a stupid decoration they are (or were). Nowadays young families are showing greater prowess and creating unique mailboxes.

Drive down a normal street in any suburb in any large city and you’ll see row after row of the standard mail boxes in front of some grand and not so grand houses. These mailboxes look forlorn as they wait for the daily visit from the mail carrier. Even the mail bearing person probably finds delivering mail to lonely looking square wood container with a number stamped on it, a boring task. If someone was to erect a mailbox that was different and unique, it would certainly brighten up the neighborhood and make people, walking by, stop and look. It may even bring a smile to the mail carrier’s face. It is time to break from monotony and add some color to our lives and place unique mailboxes in front of our houses.

So, what kind of unique mailboxes are causing car-stopping interest these days? The giant 44 Magnum revolver with the words “Make my day”, inscribed　a long the barrel, finishing with, “any mail?” is certainly a crowd pleaser. Then there is the manikin painted entirely blue with a mailbox as a head, has quite a few stares daily. This life like manikin really is something that stands out on the street it is located. Both of these unique mailboxes were built by the owners of the house they are mounted in front of and therefore are not able to be bought in any home center. For those wishing to have their own unique mailbox but lack the imagination and manual dexterity to do it, there are stores that are retailing in unique mailboxes and their range of different boxes is extensive.
