Mailboxes For Sale - A Look Into My Personal Search

The large wooden sign swinging on rusted hinges read, “Mailboxes for sale”. I had never thought of a mailbox being sold. They always seemed to be at the front gate of every house I’ve ever lived in and therefore not considered a commodity. I pushed open the green wooden door and stepped into the store. Around me, hanging from hooks, were all kinds of mailboxes large ones, small ones, metal ones and wooden ones. Many were from famous companies like Salsbury Industries a company that has been manufacturing mailboxes for more than 60 years.
Indeed many people associated mailboxes with Salsbury. An elderly lady stood behind a small counter, she smiled and beckoning me to look around. On one wall another sign repeated the words from outside, “Mailboxes for Sale”. I smiled and wondered to myself if this was a thriving business. Surely stores such as this were a dying bred – forced out of business by the giant home centers spreading across the country like out of control octopi. The elderly lady shuffled from around the counter, moved up beside me. She began to explain that all mailboxes for sale were made of good quality materials and could give a house some sort of individually on a boring suburban street. I was also told that the mailboxes for sale were selling fast and that I had better be quick to purchase otherwise I would miss out. She was a sagacious old bird who knew how to put people at ease – I was at ease and bought a mailbox. Mailboxes for sale, still seems strange to me to hear someone say or to read it on sign, we just assume every house or apartment has one. We see signs stating houses for sale, cars, motorcycles, bicycles and even pets for sale but rarely, if ever, do we read a sign saying mailboxes for sale. Mailboxes, as mentioned above, come in a slew of different shapes, sizes and materials and are usually designed and built to endure all types of weather conditions.
Whenever we move into a house or apartment one of the first things we do is check out where the mailbox is. If we build a house, the last item we buy prior to moving in, is the mailbox. The lonely mailbox is probably one of the most important pieces of furniture outside our house. In the days before the Internet it was our only contact with the outside world. Nowadays, however, the only mailboxes for sale are email mailboxes and they are free.
